Charity

The word charity came from the Old French word charite’. The French word came from the Latin word caritas. The Latin word originally mean dear, precious, or having a high price.

In Christian theology the term caritas became the translation for the Greek word, agape’ which means boundless love and kindness to others, just as the love of God is for humans. Charity has become the word meaning direct love in the English translation. St. Paul’s agape’ was not mainly about good works and giving to the poor, but the English version has taken on the primary definition.

Charity is considered the giving of money, goods, or time to unfortunate ones. This can be done directly or through many charitable orgainizations. The religious reference the giving charity is called the giving of alms. The most obvious meaning of the English term is one something that is needed for survival.

There are typical objects of charity which include orphans, widows, sick, or disabled ones. Some charitable direct all of their giving to members of their group. However, giving to anyone in need can be referred to as charity. There is a saying that states charity begins at home but it normally relates to giving to someone not related to you and it is given without affection.

Charity is usually concerned with giving of basic needs such as water, food, shelter, clothing and medical attention, but there are other things that can be viewed as charity. Some of these things include visiting prisoners or homebound people, providing a dowry for a poor woman, paying the ransom for a captive, and giving for the education of orphanss. Charity is also the making of donations to certain organization that benefit people indirectly. These include giving to organizations for cancer or other medical disease research.

A Roman Catholic order, Missionaries of Charity, is dedicated to helping the poor. A prayer may be offered by the recipient. In medieval Europe, it was the custom to have a feast for the poor in return for their prayers for the one who had died. Sometimes benefactors are recognized by having their name displayed on certain objects or buildings. If the recipient gives anything of material value in return it is not usually considered charity.

Charity originally only involved the benefactor giving directly to the recipient. People who were not able to support themselves, or who pretended to be disabled, would often become beggars.

There are now many institutions that carry out the work of helping the poor. These organizations are called charities. Food banks, orphanages, religious groups, and hospitals can sometimes be referred to as charities. This lets people who would not have the actual time or assets to directly help the poor do through a team effort. Donations go to help monetarily and support the ones who are able to work directly with the needy . Institutions have the resources to check out their applicants and find the many fraudulent claims and those who are really needy.
